The President of a large engineering firm in Scarborough contacted us on behalf of his client, a major steel producer in southwestern Ontario. They needed four coke oven feed systems, previously supplied by a German manufacturer. Could any North American manufacturer refurbish their existing systems to the high standards of quality they'd come to rely on? And save them money?
Our engineering and estimating staff reviewed their complete engineered shop drawings. We determined the quantity of steel required, itemized gear boxes, drive motors and miscellaneous hardware, and calculated the labour costs of fabricating, machining and testing the feed system. In the face of competitive quotes from across North America, our bid succeeded.
As the person with the most expertise in building custom machinery, our Machine Shop Foreman was placed in charge of the project from beginning to end. Right away, he held a production review meeting with our Plant Manager, Estimating Manager and Fabricating Shop Foreman. They finalized the delivery schedule and ordered mill-certified steel for the job. In keeping with our Quality Assurance procedures, the Machine Shop Foreman personally checked the order and quality of materials on receipt.
The Machine Shop Foreman then coordinated schedules of operation for both machining and fabricating shops. He arranged sub-contracted services including stress relieving and Quality Control tests.
To prepare for the installation, we conducted a trial assembly at our facility. Our engineering client was present to witness the final inspection, including testing and assembly. In this case the installation had been contracted out, and we arranged for their contractors to be present for the disassembly.
Individual parts were sand blasted and painted in our paint shop, then reassembled in four large sections for shipping. As always, we sought competitive quotes for delivery and made all of the necessary arrangements to crate and ship the product to the steel plant, on time.
Our engineering client was present at the plant to oversee the installation and testing. After our trial assembly and testing, it was no surprise that everything went smoothly. The steel manufacturer was satisfied with the results, and so, in turn, was our engineering client - so satisfied that he contracted us to manufacture four more coke oven feed systems that same year.
